More About LEAD

LEAD (Leadership for Environment and Development) is the world’s largest not-for-profit organization promoting leadership and sustainable development. Founded in 1991, LEAD has 13 member programmes around the world, with a fast growing network of leaders and professionals in more than 80 countries, who are inspired and committed to achieving leadership and good governance for a sustainable world. In Africa, a number of individuals from various sectors have been trained to exercise leadership in sustainable development. LEAD identifies outstanding young people across sectors and cultures, develop their leadership potential and understanding of sustainable development, and mobilize them in a network to help achieve sustainable development. LEAD Africa comprises three LEAD member programmes (LEAD Anglophone West Africa, LEAD Francophone Africa, and LEAD Southern and Eastern Africa) in 32 countries.

THE LEAD AFRICA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME (LAFP): UPSCALING LEADERSHIP TRAINING IN AFRICA…
LEAD Africa, LEAD International and the Shell Foundation, is implementing the LEAD Africa Fellowship Programme (LAFP) whose aim is to promote leadership for environment and sustainable development. LEAD Africa is currently the largest and most successful initiative on leadership, environment and development in Africa. Building on LEAD Africa‘s 15 years of experience, they will train over 500 mid career leaders each year from different sectors, cultures and countries across the continent in both leadership skills and sustainable development from by 2015.
Apart from recruiting the best and brightest (aged 25-45) the programme addresses some of the world’s and Africa’s most pressing emerging challenges: leadership, governance, social entrepreneurship, and business principles to climate change, while equipping mid-career professionals with appropriate skills to become exemplary leaders, ready to impact change for sustainable development.
Each participant has a personal development plan to expand their leadership abilities.
The LAFP is by country and started in 2010 in Nigeria and Senegal as the pilot phase which graduated Cohort 15 Fellows at the Pan-African Session in Dakar – Senegal (September 26- October 2, 2010) and at the International Session held at Port Elizabeth South Africa (October 31 to November 6, 2010).
In 2011, the LAFP rolled out to Chad, Malawi and Tanzania with lessons learnt from the pilot which was constantly monitored with well-defined key performance indicators to ensure that all aspects of the programme including management, curriculum content and methodology to meet the key objectives. The Pan-African session 2011 was hosted in Abuja-Nigeria. For 2012, the LAFP will continue in Chad, Malawi, Senegal, Tanzania and The Gambia.
The LAFP is African-led with a distinctive African identity. Training takes place in situ (2 national sessions and one pan-African session of one week each, or 18 days) and by virtual means (online distance learning, teleconferencing, forums, etc.).The pan-African Session where associates are graduating will be held in Malawi this 2012.
However a one week International Session which is optional & paid for is organized each year by LEAD International.
