GYIN-Gambia Secretary General To Attend Global Greens Congress In Dakar

The third Global Greens Congress and the first in Africa, will be held in Dakar, Senegal from 27 March to 1 April, 2012. The Global Greens 2012 will be hosted by the Fédération Démocratique des Ecologistes du Sénégal (FEDES) in partnership with the African Green Federation and the Global Greens Coordination.
 Miss Meita Touray, secretary general, Global Youth Innovation Network- Gambia better know as GYIN-Gambia has been selected by Global Greens to be part of its Global Greens congress delegates. Touray will depart at the Banjul International Airport early morning on Tuesday 27 March, 2012 to join the Global Greens 2012 congress delegates.

 The aims of the congress among others is to enhance and empower the network between young green activists and organisations around the world, work on a green vision and an action plan for GYG network, exchange green skills and discuss about the following- Cooperatives for poverty eradication, education and health for all, youth grassroots training and women empowernment in Africa.
 The Global Greens congress will be held in Africa, a continent that exemplifies both the hope and the challenge of the many pressing issues facing the world, said GYIN-Gambia secretary general.
 At the Global Young Greens (GYG), there will be an opportunity to pass proposals, action plans and elect a new Steering Committe adding that as a delegated representing GYIN-Gambia, she will have the opportunity to participate in decision making during the General Assembly as she has already been registered as a members.
 "My funding came through an additional funding for travel cost for one Youth leader from Africa, and when they look through my application, they selected me as a candidate, " she revealed.
 The Global Greens Congresses are exhilarating, empowering and vital as people come from all over the Green world with different cultures, diverse histories and many languages but united by a sense of global citizenship and committed to common political values and ideals, said Touray.
 b"This Congress will have on its agenda the push for real democracy flowering in north Africa, the need for fundamental economic reform and a Green New Deal, climate change and energy, and the safeguarding of life itself -- the world's biodiversity, especially in marine environments," GYIN-Gambia secretary general explained.
 She noted that the congress is to take the next steps to strengthen the Global Greens and improve their capacity for cooperation and actions.
 According to her, the Greens are committed to tackling the social and ecological crises facing humanity and the planet, she added, this Congress will focus on planning for action -- it will help shape Green politics and so world politics for the coming decades," she pointed out.
 Other meetings, Touray said will be held in conjunction with the Congress to make the most of the opportunity for people to come together recalling that the first congress was in Canberra, Australia, in 2001 and the second in Sao Paolo, Brazil, in 2008.
 During the congress, Touray said the a gender seminar will be held which she will take part fully adding that it aims and objectives has three concrete objectives- an introduction to gender with a focus on different background and best-practices; networking and awareness raising.
 And the target group for the gender seminar is young political activists from all countries who are already active in their respective networks or interested in the topic.
 The gender topic will cover introduction sexual and reproductive rights, sexual violence and conflict, raise your voice- Using the social media, interactive space and study visit to a women's shelter in Dakar.
 At this, gender seminar, she says "we (participants) want to focus on what the topics entails and how we can relate to in  our work as gender activists."
 "We also want to focus on different realities from Africa, Asia, America and Europe, which is why the seminar on gender will be inclusive and participatory. She added that every participant will have a chance to relate the situation in their respective countries and /or continents.
 For the study visit, she said they (participants) want to visit a local women's shelter in Dakar to learn more about the current situation of the theme at the local level. By this, "we want to connect the theoretical workshops to practical occurrences noting that the aim of the visit is to establish new contacts for further cooperation and exchange and to give the possibility to network with the local and actors on the subject," she disclosed.
 The third Global Young Greens congress offers participants the best platform to be part of a diverse group of young people interested and committed to demystify gender, she said.
Miss Touray finally thanked GYIN-Gambia for selecting her to participate in the congress.
