Empowering Local Media Worldwide Celebrate World Press Freedom Day, May 1-3, 2011 - Register Now Dear Njie, Join Internews at UNESCO's commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2011 in Washington, DC,May 1-3, 2011. The theme of this year's global conference is 21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers. Dynamic conversations, commemorative, educational and interactive events will be held at the Newseum, the National Press Club, and other venues in Washington, DC. Session topics include  “Social Media: The New News Network?” and “New Barriers: Censorship in the Digital Age,” with leading thinkers on global media issues, including Wael Abbas, Egyptian journalist and blogger, and Bob Woodward of the Washington Post. Tara Susman-Peña of Internews’ Media Map Project will be a featured speaker in Breakout Session 1.2,Mapping How Media Makes a Difference, on May 2. Registration for World Press Freedom Day 2011 is open. Space is limited, so register as soon as possible in order to guarantee your place. Many sessions will be streamed live online for those unable to attend in person. World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every year on May 3 worldwide. The United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) organizes World Press Freedom Day commemorations to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
