As we look toward the New Year, I am thankful for the friends and supporters of Internews, who make our work with journalists, media professionals and communities around the world possible.

Internews and its partners work globally, often in difficult locations, to ensure that accurate, quality information reaches those who need it most. This year has been no exception, and I am immensely proud of the work we've done.

• In Haiti, our Creole-language News You Can Use radio program, produced by local journalists and launched days after the January earthquake, continues to be a daily source of information for the millions still displaced from their homes.

• Worldwide, the "story of the century" – climate change – is being reported on in developing countries with the help of Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN). Building the skills of journalists in communities with arguably the most to lose, EJN works to bring information on environmental challenges from sea level rise, biodiversity loss, and climate change back to those most affected.

• In Afghanistan, Masood Farivar, manager of "Salam Watandar," calls Internews' radio programming "the journalism of hope." Internews has put a particular emphasis on programming for women, children and the disabled. Advocates credit the disability radio program with helping pass the ground-breaking Law on Rights and Benefits of Disabled Persons, which went into effect on December 19.

• Internews is working with citizen journalists in the West Bank to enhance their skills and knowledge on the Ushahidi mapping program. This innovative web application allows the user to upload video, pictures and text from a mobile phone and post it on a map.

I'm inspired by the people we work with every day. The result of free-flowing news and access to media is that individuals have the information they need to make choices for their families and participate in their communities.
