IEC Clears the Air

NEWS BANJUL THE GAMBIA(MB)-The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has denied that it is currently engaged in a voter registration exercise.
A press release issued by the commission said the IEC is currently considering various options for the use of biometric-based-solutions in the forthcoming registration of voters exercise commencing in January 2011.
It added that the CODE (from Canada) and Zetes PASS (of Belgium) two companies and contractors conducted a mock registration exercise from 14 to16 January 2010, for both the stakeholders and the commission to make an informed judgement on the way forward in the election process.
The release that was signed by IEC chairman Alhaji Mustapha Carayol stated that, all things being equal, registration of voters will commence in January 2011, and that recruitment and training of personnel will be conducted in the last quarter of 2010.
